What makes for a perfect beach vacation? Travel forums are full of iconic vacation-turned-nightmare experiences because someone expected a different type of beach, stepped on a sea urchin or got serious sunburns because of no shade at their destination.
Connecto’s private airport transfers allows you to get to any beach, no matter how remote, but to help you avoid such mishaps and assist you in making the most of your beach holiday, we interviewed the true experts in this field: 1001beach, a massive online guide covering over 3000 beaches all over the world down to every tiny detail a discerning traveler may care for.

What is the history of 1001beach and how did your business develop?
The project was founded in 2018. At that time, the founders of 1001beach.com were running a travel agency specializing in beach holidays.
Through extensive personal travel experience and continuous feedback from our offline agency clients - who regularly asked specific questions about beaches near particular hotels, sand types, water entry conditions, wave patterns, and child-friendliness - we accumulated a substantial body of expert knowledge.
Initially, we compiled this information into an internal office database to better serve our clients. Over time, that database evolved into a public, multilingual online platform.
In essence, 1001beach.com is a specialized encyclopedia dedicated exclusively to beaches around the world.
How many beaches do you have covered on your website, and how does keeping everything up to date work?
Currently, our database features detailed information on 3,735 of the most popular beaches worldwide. We continuously expand our coverage by adding new beach profiles, and we publish engaging articles about beach travel on our blog on a weekly basis.
What is the one thing that people often overlook when planning a beach holiday, but that can really affect their experience?
The number one reason a beach holiday can go wrong is that travelers often choose their destination based on stunning photos from travel brochures or social media. In reality, a wide range of unexpected issues can arise. Here are some of the most common pitfalls:
Misleading photography
Those picture-perfect shots of paradise beaches are typically taken during the low season or at 7 a.m., when the beach is deserted. In reality, during peak tourist season, the same beach may be so overcrowded that it becomes virtually impossible to enjoy.
Jellyfish season
Some idyllic beaches can be ruined by seasonal jellyfish invasions - something rarely mentioned in mainstream travel guides. The beach may look perfect on paper - white sand, gentle entry ideal for children - but your exact travel dates may coincide with jellyfish season.
Tides, waves, and water conditions
It is essential to research wave patterns and tidal behavior. In certain regions of Southeast Asia, beaches with crystal-clear turquoise water can transform into murky greenish-brown pools during specific times of the year. Travel brochures are not lying per se - the azure water does exist, just not year-round.
Safety concerns for families with children
Many families arrive expecting a relaxing getaway, only to find themselves in a state of constant vigilance because of steep drop-offs at the water’s edge or strong surf conditions.
Mismatch between expectations and resort character
It is crucial to understand the vibe of the specific beach destination to get the experience you are truly looking for. For example, if you are seeking a quiet romantic retreat, you should verify that your dream beach is not, in fact, a well-known party hotspot.

Beaches such as Patong in Phuket, Magaluf in Mallorca, or St. George’s Bay in St. Julian’s, Malta, may look stunning in photos but are in reality noisy and chaotic, with nightlife that does not wind down until past 5 a.m. The reverse also applies: if you are young and looking for vibrant nightlife, it is equally important not to end up at a quiet retirement-oriented micro-resort in the middle of nowhere with zero entertainment options.
More and more travelers are using AI for travel advice these days. Do you think this will threaten travel guides?
Yes, it certainly poses a challenge. However, we are also seeing a significant influx of traffic to our website originating from AI-generated responses. AI tools typically provide general recommendations - often based on our data - and include a reference link to our site. Many users then click through to access more detailed, in-depth information about a specific beach. So, in a sense, AI is also functioning as an additional discovery channel for us.
In your personal opinion, which country has underrated beaches that deserve more visitors?
Here are several countries with underrated beaches that, in our view, deserve far more attention:
Albania
The Albanian Riviera offers a compelling combination of crystal-clear water, beautiful coves, a dramatic mountain backdrop, and significantly less pretension than its more well-known Mediterranean neighbors. Official tourism sources specifically highlight the coastal stretch from Vlorë to Sarandë and Ksamil.
Oman
Many people associate Oman primarily with the desert, overlooking its spectacular coastline. Al Mughsail Beach near Salalah, for example, is one of the country’s premier coastal destinations. Recent travel guides also draw attention to its secluded white-sand beaches and hidden coves.

Mozambique
The Bazaruto Archipelago region is particularly noteworthy. This destination is ideal for travelers seeking not just a beach, but an experience of a virtually untouched coastline: white sand, turquoise water, rich marine life, world-class diving, and far less mass tourism than many better-known Indian Ocean destinations.
Slovenia
Not the most obvious beach destination, but that is precisely its appeal. Despite having a relatively short coastline, Slovenia boasts well-maintained swimming areas and charming coastal towns such as Piran and Portorož - and it is frequently overlooked in favor of neighboring Croatia and Italy.
São Tomé and Príncipe
One of the most “hidden gem” options available. These islands are known for their pristine nature, uncrowded beaches, and eco-tourism. Some of the beaches even serve a conservation role, providing nesting grounds for sea turtles.
If I had to choose just one, I would personally recommend Oman or Mozambique: the former surprises people because its beaches are almost never on anyone’s radar, while the latter delivers a wild, island-like sense of seclusion.
What’s next in store for 1001beach, and how do you see your guides developing in the future?
The project has been running for eight years, and in the near future we plan to continue developing it the same way we always have - adding new beach profiles, publishing informative articles about beach travel, and curating rankings of the best beachfront hotels.
We firmly believe that if this work is done with consistently high quality, the project will continue to grow regardless of the AI revolution. After all, the data centers that power AI systems require efficient water cooling - so perhaps, in the near future, the AI itself will be scouting for the ideal beach location to build its next data center and then recommending our site to everyday travelers.
And that is no stretch - we cover beaches not only in tropical destinations but also in Iceland, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, and beyond.

We’d like to express our sincere thanks for sharing these valuable insights with us, and we wish the 1001beach team all the best in their future work as they continue to help travelers get the most out of their vacations!
