Hamburg Luchthaven naar
Kiel

Water is a big part of life in Kiel, Germany: naval heritage, shipbuilding, the Fjord. The largest sailing event in the world is also hosted here. Kiel is a maritime city of authentic German feel, with lots of nature spots, canals, parks, and beaches. You will also get to see the historic buildings, museums, cafes. Don't miss out on the buzzing nightlife.

Does your trip start at Hamburg Airport? Continue reading to find out how you can get from there to Kiel. There are 4 ways to travel:

  • Bus
  • Train
  • Taxi
  • Private transportation

Trein

If you prefer to travel by train, you can get to "Hamburg Airport (Flughafen) station" from Terminals 1 and 2 (Arrivals) via elevators, escalators, and fixed stairs. You will have to make a connection at the Hamburg Main Train station (Hauptbahnhof). Your trip will be about an hour and a half long, or even longer, depending on which connection you make.

Departures are roughly every hour, so be prepared for waiting. You will be paying about 25€ for a single ride, and you can buy the ticket online, at ticket machines, or via the smartphone app.

You can check the timetables and prices at bahn.de

Bus

Company DB Autokraft has a shuttle service from Hamburg Airport to Kiel (Schwedenkai Terminal). You will find the bus stop located just outside the Airport Plaza, at level 0. The bus stop is marked with the letter ˝B˝. You can buy the tickets either online, or from the driver, and your one-way ticket will be about 21€. This is a fairly good price for a distance of 96 kilometers (60 miles). Your journey will take about an hour and a half, and the departures are roughly every hour.

Shuttles are affordable and safe; however, you are losing a lot of time and flexibility, plus you do not have much comfort. You also have a limited luggage allowance.

ADVICE: Label your luggage with a name tag to avoid possible mix-ups.

Taxi

If you are looking to save time and have more flexibility, take a taxi. You will find taxis parked right outside Hamburg Airport. You will recognize them by ivory color. They also have the roof sign ˝taxi˝. You will be pleased to know that the taxi industry is officially regulated in Hamburg. And so are the rates. Your total taxi fare will be based on the following:

  • a base fare (€ 3.20)
  • the distance per kilometer (about € 2,00 per kilometer)
  • standby (about €0,50 per minute)

The taximeter will display your total fare at the end of the journey. To sum it all up, getting a taxi to Kiel is convenient and saving you time, but there is a big downside: the taxi rate is very expensive. This is a big drawback for many passengers. But luckily there is a good alternative to a taxi, that will be more affordable, but gives you the same benefits
